Genoa and Venezia to face charges

GENOA, Jul 18 (SW) - The Serie A future of Genoa has been cast in doubt following charges which were brought before the club and relegated Serie B side Venezia.

Doubts were raised over the legitimacy of Genoa’s final day 3-2 victory over the Lagunari, which clinched promotion, with subsequent investigations into phone records suggesting telephone conversations took place between players and officials.

A statement has been released by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) saying Genoa chief Enrico Preziosi, his son Matteo and director Stefano Capozucca have been accused of ‘collaborating to achieve sporting fraud.’

Venezia owner Franco Dal Cin, director general Michele Dal Cin and fellow director Giuseppe Pagliara have also been charged, along with Venezia players Martin Lejsal and Massimo Borgobello.

The two clubs have also been charged with ‘direct responsibility,’ in the continuing investigations.

It has been suggested that a sports trial will hear the case on July 26, with both clubs to protest their innocence.

A guilty finding would be likely to force the demotion of Genoa back to Serie B, only a matter of days after Torino and Messina lost their places in Italian football’s top flight for insecure finances.

The punishment for Venezia is not so clear, with the club already having been relegated from Serie B at the end of last season.
