LONDON, Jun 3 (SW) - After a long saga that involved three clubs, Chelsea have finally secured the services of 19-year-old Nigerian midfielder Jon Obi Mikel from Norwegian club Lyn.
The transfer fee agreed was a total of £16 million, with £12 million going to Manchester United and £4 million going to Lyn after the player backed out of a pre-contract agreement he signed with the Red Devils last year.
After signing that document, Mikel claimed pressure led him to agree with United, and then Chelsea quickly came in to steal the player away, but the Premiership champions were accused of wrongdoing by United and will paY them £12 million in a settlement over the issue.
Half of the money will be due to United immediately, with the rest to be paid out in a year and the same deal has been made as part of the settlement with Lyn.
Mikel becomes the fourth major signing for the champions this summer after the arrivals of Michael Ballack, Andriy Shevchenko and Salomon Kalou.
