Greece, Malta and Turkey win in Group C

ZENICA, Oct 11 (SW) - Greece took three points in Bosnia-Herzegovina while Malta achieved their first qualification victory in thirteen years. Turkey easily defeated Moldova.
Bosnia-Herzegovina - Greece 0-4 Reigning European champions Greece were never really troubled against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Striker Angelos Charisteas scored from a penalty kick in the eighth minute and his side would hold on to that narrow lead until the final phase. It was in the 82nd minute when Christos Patsatzoglou added a security goal and Georgios Samaras got another, three minutes later. And the suffering was not over yet for the Bosnians, as Konstantinos Katsouranis set the final score to 0-4 in added time. Bosnia's Sasa Papac was sent off, five minutes into the second half. Malta - Hungary 2-1 Malta achieved their first qualification victory since beating Estonia in May 1993, for the World Cup in the United States a year later. Andre Schembri opened the score for the Maltese after 14 minutes but Sandor Torghelle levelled five minutes later. Vilmos Vanczak was expulsed for Hungary in the 38th minute and Schembri insisted on being the hero as he scored what would be the winning goal in the 53rd minute. Xanboola. Turkey - Moldova 5-0 Turkey meanwhile achieved an easy win over Moldova. The man of the match was without a doubt Hakan Sükür, with goals in the 35th, 37th (penalty), 43rd and 73rd minute. The only other goal was scored by Tuncay Sanli in the 68th minute. |
