ENGLAND, Sep 21 (SW) – Last night saw the demise of three Premiership clubs in the Carling Cup.
Chesterfield 2 – Manchester City 1 The pressure is really beginning to mount on City manager Stuart Pearce after his side was dumped from the competition by League One outfit Chesterfield. Georgios Samaras got the visitors ahead with a goal after 40 minutes, however a Caleb Folan equaliser just two minutes after half time had the hosts right back in the contest. A great strike on the volley from Derek Niven ensured Chesterfield’s progress to the next round, keeping the spotlight firmly on a frustrated Stuart Pearce. Fulham 1 – Wycombe 2 Fulham started badly with Jermaine Easter giving the visitors the lead inside 8 minutes, with alarms bells ringing when Tommy Mooney converted a penalty to make the score line 2-0. Heidar Helguson gave the fans hope with a goal early in the second half but, unfortunately for the Fulham faithful that is where the scoring finished. Middlesbrough 0 – Notts County 1 A solitary goal in the 26th minute was enough to see Notts County overcome 2004 winner Middlesbrough. Tcham N’Toya capitalised on an error from young Boro fullback Tony McMahon, with the hosts unable to find a way back into the contest. |
