Ajax technical director Martin van Geel has resigned amid concern over changes to his role after Marco van Basten's appointment as coach. Van Basten will take over at Ajax after leading the Netherlands at EURO 2008, and has also taken charge of the whole professional football department.

The 47-year-old Van Geel, who left AZ Alkmaar to join Ajax in July 2005, said: "I don't see a role for myself as an independently functioning technical director. Ajax and I agree: two captains on one ship does not work."
