LONDON (AFP) - Barnsley forward Kayode Odejayi made amends for his FA Cup semi-final misery with a double strike in his side's crucial 3-0 win against promotion-chasing Watford on Wednesday.
Odejayi missed a sitter in Barnsley's 1-0 loss to Cardiff at Wembley, but the Nigerian scored twice at Vicarage Road to lift Simon Davey's team out of the Championship relegation zone. Stephen Foster scored in between Odejayi's goals in a shock victory that also confirmed Colchester's relegation to League One. Watford could have gone top of the table with a win but Adrian Boothroyd's side struggled to test Barnsley keeper Lee Steele in the first half. They paid the price after 36 minutes as Odejayi scored for the first time since his FA Cup quarter-final winner against Chelsea. Diego Leon broke into the Watford half and picked out Jon Macken on the right-hand side of the area. Macken drove a cross towards Odejayi, who tapped in for his first away goal for the Tykes. Barnsley moved further ahead in the 47th minute. Leon's corner flashed across to Foster and the defender rose highest to bullet a header past Richard Lee. Leon was the provider again in the 54th minute as Odejayi ran onto the midfielder's pass and calmly beat Lee with a perfectly-weighted chip. Barnsley's semi-final conquerers Cardiff were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at play-off hopefuls Ipswich. Dave Jones's side, who face Portsmouth in the final on May 17, took the lead through midfielder Gavin Rae in the 37th minute. But the Bluebirds were pegged back by in the 73rd minute when teenage striker Jordan Rhodes scored his first goal for Ipswich. There was more bad news for Cardiff as midfielder Joe Ledley, their goal hero against Barnsley, limped off with an injury in the second half that could threaten his involvement in the final. |
