Wigan Athletic left-back Erik Edman is set to be out for six months after rupturing knee ligaments. The Latics confirmed the extent of the damage today, after the defender was injured in last weekend's Barclays Premier League match at Blackburn Rovers.

The Swede ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament to his left knee. He will return to Sweden for surgery soon.

Wigan manager Steve Bruce must now consider how to cover for Edman, though Kevin Kilbane would appear to be the most obvious candidate to fill in at left-back.
