The British Government are set to review the violence that marred Wednesday night’s UEFA Cup Final in Manchester.

The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown issued a statement in which he stated that his government will review police powers to stop violent public drunkenness.

He added that such behaviour could have an adverse effect on the country’s bid to host further major football events.

The announcement was made after the fighting that had broken out between Scottish fans and riot police on Wednesday in the city centre after Zenit St Petersburg had beaten Glasgow Rangers 2 – 0.

That night a total of forty two arrests were made after a Russian fan and fifteen police had been injured. The Russian fan had been stabbed in the back at the stadium before the match.

Gordon Brown also went on to say that the country did have laws that enabled the authorities to control drinking in public places and these may have to be stepped up if England were to be successful in its bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

He concluded by saying that this was an urgent matter that needed to be sorted out once and for all.
